ADHD and Repeat Prescriptions: How to Reorder Your Medication Before You're Down to the Last Few Tablets

Running low on ADHD medication before remembering to reorder is common. Here's how to time your repeat prescription request, set one useful reminder and stop the last-minute panic.

What's happening

ADHD and repeat prescriptions can be a frustrating mix. You notice the box is getting light, tell yourself you'll order more later, and then it's Friday evening with two tablets left. The NHS says you should request a repeat prescription up to 5 working days before you need it. Some ADHD medicines, like methylphenidate, are controlled drugs, so you may need to prove who you are when you collect and have to pick them up within 28 days.

How to get moving

Set the reminder on the day you collect, not the day you run low. When you get home with the new box, work out how many days it covers, take away seven, and put a phone alarm on that date that says exactly what to do, like "Order meds in the NHS App". Seven days covers the five working days plus a weekend. When the alarm goes off, order there and then instead of snoozing it.

Important tip

Choose a pharmacy in the NHS App, or ask your GP surgery to send your prescription to one, and check whether the pharmacy can text you when it's ready. That's two fewer things to remember. If your medication comes from a specialist clinic or private provider, ask how much notice they need. If you do run out, NHS 111 online can help you get an urgent supply, but don't stop or change your medication without speaking to your prescriber.
