ADHD and Phone Calls: How to Make the Call You've Been Dodging for Days or Even Weeks

You need to ring the GP, the bank or the council, but the call keeps sliding to tomorrow. Write three lines first, pick a set moment and get it done.

The tiny green ADHDer cube mascot stands at the far end of a long grey corridor, holding a phone handset in a pool of cool light.

What's happening

ADHD and phone calls can be an awkward mix. You need to ring the GP, the bank or the council, and the call itself would take five minutes. But it means waiting on hold, not knowing what they'll ask, and hunting for an account number while someone waits on the line. So you leave it until after lunch, then tomorrow. Meanwhile nothing moves, and the call starts to feel much bigger than it is.

How to get moving

Before you dial, open a note and write three lines: why you're calling, the one thing you need by the end, and the details they'll ask for, like your date of birth or reference number. Make the call straight after something you already do, like your first cup of tea. Put it on speaker and fold washing while you're on hold. Before you hang up, note who you spoke to and what they agreed.

Important tip

Check whether you need to ring at all. Plenty of things can be sorted online now. For GP appointments, the NHS says you can book through the NHS App, the NHS website or a form on your surgery's website. Some surgeries only put some appointments online, and you should still call if you need an urgent appointment.
